I have struggled to summarise 40 years of design experience into a short, succinct section suitable for a website so have created the table below to show where, for how long and what experience I gained (apologies to mobile users). If I had design responsibility when designs were manufactured, assembled and supplied to the customer the "Production Design Authority" box is a "Y" - my phone rang if there was an issue in production or at the customers site.

This "experience table", in combination with the examples shown on the Projects page, provides a summary of my experience and flexibility and demonstrates my ability to deliver the design services outlined on the Services page for your design task or project.

The following paragraphs provide some further detail about 3 companies from the list above:

  • Renishaw was growing at an annual rate of 30% over the 8 years I was there. I started as a sponsored student when the company had fewer than 100 employees and left when it was approximately 400 strong. It is owned by former mechanical design engineers and the mechanical design engineer was responsible for the design and management of their project from initial concept through to full production. The key strength of the company was creating innovative products that were "right first time" and designed for production; although a demanding culture it provided a firm foundation for my future career as a design engineer and still has a major influence on my approach.

  • At AMARC (University of Bristol) I worked on an EU funded project to identify and automate a butchery task. I was responsible for the technical delivery of the project goals, reporting to the management team that consisted of the research centre director, the directors / owners of the Spanish and German companies and the EU technical assessor. At AMARC I managed a team of 4 post-graduate engineers providing the vision system, 3D path planning, cutter development and system integration as well as managing our partners technical contributions. This project gave me valuable experience of applying technology (robot path planning and computer vision) to solve a skilled but poorly defined task (butchery); more a systems engineer role.

  • Babcock Marine supply the weapon tubes and storage / handling / loading system for submarines. The design stage is approximately 3 years long to ensure system integration and meet the rigorous customer requirements. The first of kind tubes and handling systems are installed and the submarine sections welded around them so there is little margin for rework, or repair, over the 25+ year life. At Babcock I was taught how to perform design scoping calculations using Mathcad to ensure my designs met the stringent strength requirements prior to formal assessment by stress engineers.
